Southwest: Flyers can now buy boarding upgrades in advance: Travel Weekly

Southwest Airlines launched the ability for customers to digitally upgrade their boarding on eligible itineraries, as per a Southwest post on the forum FlyerTalk.

Previously, customers had to purchase upgraded boarding at the counter.

Upgraded boarding, at $30 per segment, per passenger, enables customers to secure an A1 to A15 boarding position, depending on availability, according to Southwest, which could give them a leg-up on snagging their preferred seat or overhead bin space.

The service will be available for purchase beginning 24 hours before a flight’s scheduled departure and will end 30 minutes before that scheduled departure, according to Southwest.

Passengers with a Business Select ticket already receive A1 to A15 boarding positions. The benefit is for those flying on Anytime, Wanna Get Away or the recently added Wanna Get Away Plus fares.

Southwest also recently changed the digital check-in cutoff time to 20 minutes from 60 minutes, according to the company.
