Spirit Airlines will increase service to San Juan this summer, adding five new gateways to the Puerto Rican capital.
Daily flights from Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth and Detroit will begin May 5. Spirit will launch thrice-weekly Hartford-San Juan service on June 7.
In addition, the carrier will increase frequencies to San Juan from Baltimore, Newark, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando over the course of the spring.
The additions will bring Spirit to 11 destinations from San Juan, placing it behind only Frontier, Cirium schedule data shows. In terms of total seat capacity, Spirit will be second in the market to JetBlue, an airline with which it intends to merge, pending a regulatory approval process.
In the Detroit-San Juan market, Spirit will compete with Frontier and Delta. From O’Hare, Spirit will battle American and United. From Atlanta, the discount carrier will compete against Delta and Frontier; from Dallas/Fort Worth, American and Frontier.
And from Hartford, Spirit will go head-to-head against JetBlue and Frontier.
Wednesday’s announcement might have been a response to a San Juan expansion announced by Frontier last month. In May, Frontier will add six new San Juan gateways, including Detroit and Dallas-Fort Worth, as well as Chicago flights from Midway Airport.
